Porn addiction- is it a real thing?

Pornography. All of us have seen it at least once. For those of us who grew up with the internet, it was our introduction to the workings of sex. It was a source of fascination, we’d wait for our parents to leave and then sneakily visit a website to giggle about it with our friends. Some reading this might not have gone looking for porn videos, maybe they saw it first by accident or received a vile Whatsapp forward that left them shook. After all, the connotation associated with pornography is far from positive- it is immoral, corrupting influence, it degrades women and is bad for the children, it must be avoided at all costs. But is that all there is to it?

I mean, there are arguments against pornography that don’t rely on morality but raise some valid concerns. I discovered an online community called NoFap, which vouches for the benefits of abstaining from masturbation and watching porn. They say people can get addicted to porn and use it compulsively as a way to obtain instant gratification. This can allegedly decrease motivation, confidence, and even performance in bed. It makes users, usually men, less likely to go out and sex real life sexual encounters.
